WARNING – Electric Shock Risk
Contact with the live electrical parts in the junction box of your water heater and inside the access panels can result in severe injury or death from electric shock.
IMPORTANT
Hoot smart module installation is only to be done by a trained and qualified individual.
The Hoot Smart Module.

SMART MODULE ATTACHMENT AND WIRING

1. Turn off hot water tank power at electrical panel.

Disconnect power to the hot water tank circuit and test that power has been disconnected.

2. Mounting the Hoot module.
The Hoot device should be mounted directly to the junction panel on the top of the hot water heater. If space is an issue or if the tank has a side junction box, the Hoot module can be mounted to a nearby wall. If attached to a wall, the lower conduit nipple needs to be replaced with an electrical cable connector. The balance of these instructions are for attaching the Hoot directly to the tank junction area.

3. Attaching the module to the tank and connecting wires:

  1. Remove the cover plate from the top of the hot water tank’s junction panel area and disconnect the tank’s wires from the incoming wire. If there is a ground wire attached to the cover, disconnect it.
  2. Remove right side cover on the Hoot module by removing the screws on the top right and bottom right corners.
  3. Remove the mounting bracket from the back of the unit, reverse it, and reattach with the same screw.
  4. Attach the bottom opening on the Hoot module to the cover plate piece from the tank. A metallic connector must be used to maintain ground connection with the tank (supplied with Hoot).
  5. Feed in wires from the tank through bottom connector. If there is a ground wire it can be fed though as well.
  6. Attach the Hoot and cover section to the tank.
  7. Attach the mounting bracket to the tank using one of the cover plate screws.
  8. Connect hot and neutral wires from the tank to the lower L1 and L2 terminals on the unit. Attach the ground wire to the ground screw on the grounding plate.
  1. Feed in wires from panel through top connector and connect hot and line wires to the upper L1 and L2 terminals on the unit.
  2. Ground Wire Connection. The ground wire from the incoming wire must be directly connected to the ground screw terminal on the grounding plate.
  3. Attach the tank’s remaining cover plate and install the right panel cover plate on the Hoot module.
  4. Set main on/off switch on left side of the Hoot unit to “out” position.

4. Current Sensor Connection

  1. Take cover off tank’s lower control area.
  2. Clip current sensor to either wire on the circuit.
    c. Situate current clamp so it does not interfere with reattaching
    the cover.
    d. Plug the wire from the current sensor into the Hoot control module using the bottom port.
    e. Cover wire with tape.
Using the tape provided, fully cover the sensor wire tape on the
side of the tank. This is a safety measure to prevent the wire from being accidentally pulled. Any excess wire should be bundled and taped to the back of the module or included under the tape strip on the side of the tank.

5. Thermostat Setting

  1. Tanks With Mixing Valve
    1. Set both the lower and upper thermostats to a high setting (~65˚C).
    2. Secure upper and lower cover plates back on tank.
  2. Tanks Without a Mixing Valve
    1. Do not adjust the temperature setting.
    2. If tank is set below 50˚C, inform the homeowner that the tank temperature needs to be set at 50˚C or slightlyhigher (one or two degrees) for health and safety reasons. Adjust both thermostats only with owner permission. If the owner does not agree to set the tank temperature above 50˚C the Hoot module must be removed.

6. Closure and Power Up

  1. Ensure all covers and screws are in place and connections are secure.
  2. Check that the Hoot power button is set to the “Out” or “OFF” position; This will let the tank operate normally.
  3. Turn tank power on at the electrical panel.

7. Set Up and Configuration
See the Activation Guide instructions.
