Mode Explanations

Your device will be activated and configured in Hoot Everyday mode. We highly recommend this mode to start as it gives Hoot time to learn your patterns and, if necessary, we can suggest a more optimal setting later.

The modes described below operate during the peak rate and mid-peak rate periods. During off-peak periods (including weekends) the tank operates normally and reheating is not scheduled.

Just a reminder that if the Hoot device is powered off with the button on the top left side, or, if Wi-Fi connection is lost, the tank will operate normally and water heating will not be scheduled. See the Reconnecting & Resetting page for instructions.

Mode Selection Options - Recommended

Hoot Everyday
This is the Hoot default setting and is recommended for normal and heavy use families. It prioritizes maintaining a sufficient hot water supply while minimizing heating during the highest cost periods. Over time, if Hoot determines that further savings are possible, we’ll recommend switching to Hoot Saver mode.
How it works
If you’ve selected time-of-use rates, the tank is scheduled to minimize reheating during on-peak hours as long as you have at least 20% to 25% of the tank’s capacity remaining (which is enough water for normal use, including showers). If your remaining capacity falls below this level, the tank will quickly reheat the upper section and continue to reheat for 45 to 60 minutes and add extra capacity, regardless of the time of day. A full reheat will then occur once the lower rate period begins.
If you’re on the ultra-low overnight rate, Hoot Everyday will fully heat your tank until 4 pm (weekdays), and then try to use as little energy as possible until 11 pm, while ensuring that you always have a minimum of 25% available. Most families with normal use can avoid all water heating at the highest rates with this setting.
Hoot Saver
Recommended for households with average or lower than average hot water use, and who want to save more cost and carbon. If you have time-of-use rates, Hoot Saver will do a brief top-up during the mid-day period to ensure capacity, but otherwise try to shift most reheating until the off-peak rate starts. Once again however, if the tank capacity falls below about 25%, the tank will turn on to ensure supply.
Hoot Carbon Saver
Recommended for households who want to maximize using the lowest carbon intensive generation mix. Sometimes the lowest carbon generation occurs in higher rate periods, so while most reheating will still be done in off-peak and mid-peak periods, a priority for this mode is to use the lowest carbon content power.

Mode Selections - Optional

In the Configuration section of the Hoot Activation Guide there are several choices for selecting an operating mode.

The following modes can be used for specific needs:

Hoot Away
Use this mode if you are going away. In this mode, the tank will re-heating only from 11 pm to 7 am. If no water has been used it will usually only take about 20 – 30 minutes to reheat the tank, so not much energy is used. For health and safety reasons Hoot requires that your tank reheat fully at least once a day for 5 hours or more (to prevent bacteria growth), so we don’t enable it to be turned off for a full day or for extended periods. When you choose this mode you will be able to select the number of days before it returns to the previous setting.
Hoot High Demand
If you have visitors or periods with unusually high hot water use, use this mode. High Demand mode stops the tank from scheduling the reheating and the tank will operate as if Hoot was not installed. Similar to Away mode, when you choose this mode you will be able to select the number of days before it returns to the previous setting.
